Starry Sky in the Isidore of Seville’s "Etymologies"
Abstract
The article focuses on fragments of Isidore of Seville’ Etymologies, devoted to the starry sky, primarily to the strictly astronomical chapters 29.-70. of the third book of the encyclopaedia. Isidore's presentation of astronomy consists of three parts. At the outset, the author introduces the reader to the history of the discipline and defines its object of study. Then he shows the world studied by astronomers, the sky, the heavenly bodies (planets, stars, constellations). In the most extensive chapter 70., he familiarizes the reader with the names of the latter. The description of the starry sky is artictis, vivid and varied. Drawing on the achievements of ancient scholars and poets, and combining messages from the biblical and classical traditions, Isidore achieves his goal. He reassures the reader that the vault of the starry sky suspended above his head is the work of God, fascinating and worthy of knowledge.
