In this way, the group of „fools for Christ” (<em>saloi</em>) was formed. Their spirituality had its roots in the doctrine of the apostle Paul (l Cor 3:18; 4:10). The spiritual feat of foolishness for Christ was especially widespread in ancient Syria, Egypt and Byzantium. The „blessed fool” took on an unusual style of life, appearing as someone bereft of his mental faculties, thus bringing upon himself the ridicule of others. Their outrageous and provocative behaviour masked a deeper sanctity. Madness for Christ was a radical form of asceticism and its forms and manifestations have varied, including eccentricity, self-imposed poverty, unlettered simplicity, perpetual vagrancy and public self-humiliation. The „holy fool” – <em>salos</em> took this ascetic endeavour upon himself to more effectively preach and witness to the Gospel.</p> ER -
