Archiving

“Zeszyty Naukowe Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego Jana Pawła II” applies a multi-layered archiving system designed to safeguard published content and preserve its availability in the event of technical failure, a change of publishing platform, or the cessation of the journal.

Archiving Locations

Published articles and issues of the journal are stored:
- on the KUL Journals Platform – CzasKUL, which runs on Open Journal Systems;
- in the Institutional Repository of The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin – ReKUL;
- in the POLONA digital library, run by the National Library of Poland.
Storing publications in more than one system reduces the risk of content loss in the event of a failure or the discontinuation of one of the platforms.

Persistent Identifiers and Metadata

Articles published in the journal are assigned DOIs, which enable their permanent identification and discovery.
Materials deposited in the KUL Institutional Repository receive persistent Handle identifiers. The repository describes publications using standardized metadata and enables their exposure and exchange via the OAI-PMH protocol.
If the journal is moved to another platform, the addresses associated with its DOIs are updated so that they continue to lead to accessible versions of the articles.

Backups

Data on the KUL Journals Platform — including the files of published articles, metadata, and information required for the publishing system to function — is covered by the backup procedures applied by the Platform's administrator. Backups are performed daily during nighttime hours. Seven daily backups and two weekly backups are retained on the backup server. Monthly backups are stored on LTO tapes kept in a tape library or secure safe for a period of five years.
The copies held in the KUL Institutional Repository and in POLONA provide an additional safeguard for published content, independent of its ongoing availability on the journal's website.

Preserving Access if the Journal Ceases Publication

Should “Zeszyty Naukowe KUL” cease publication, The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, as Publisher, will ensure the continued storage and availability of published content, at minimum through the KUL Institutional Repository.
Published articles will retain:
- their bibliographic details;
- their DOIs;
- their repository identifiers;
- information on authorship and licensing;
- their association with the relevant volume and issue of the journal.

If maintaining the journal's existing website is no longer possible, its DOIs will be redirected to copies of the publications held in a repository that ensures their permanent preservation.
Ceasing to accept new manuscripts or to issue further numbers will not result in the removal of previously published articles.
