Abstract

The research and its results described in the following article address the research problem: How we perceive and assimilate sounds, specifically those from musical works? The study was conducted within the framework of contemplative research inspired by phenomenology. The entire study is based on a qualitative methodology, employing contemplative techniques (self-observation, self-reporting, and contemplative note-writing). Art-based research techniques were also employed, meaning various art forms were used to study the perception of musical sounds (drawing, collages, poetry). The main goal of this publication is to demonstrate that the perception of music is influenced not only by
our musical competencies but also by our visual imagination, sensory predispositions, and personal aesthetic canons. The text demonstrates that musical reception is not only a process of direct perception but also a deeply reflective one, which can be described both in everyday language and through various artistic forms. The research concluded that three specific states (themes) of consciousness accompanying listening to music were distinguished: an analytical approach to the piece, a sense of complete connection with the composition, and a state of musical intoxication.
