Abstract

This article presents the thought of Anastasius the Sinaitic on almsgiving contained in Quaestiones et responsiones. It is divided into three parts: receiving alms, their amount and frequency, and the giver. The monk of Mount Sinai particularly emphasizes the need to be cautious in receiving alms because it involves serious obligations. The recipient of alms is to be concerned about the salvation of the giver, which means neglecting the concern to overcome his own sins. In this way, the salvation of others is somehow contrasted with the concern for one's own salvation. This is one of Anastasius' most surprising views. His novelty in presenting almsgiving lies in presenting it in the context of faith and unbelief, life and death, giver and recipient, institution and individual.
