About the Journal

Acta Mediaevalia. Series Nova is an annual journal published by the Centre for Medieval Studies, affiliated with the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, Poland. The journal, established at the end of 2023, draws upon the distinguished tradition of the Acta Mediaevalia serial publication, which started exactly 50 years earlier in 1973. In its new form as an academic journal, Acta Mediaevalia. Series Nova publishes scholarly articles in thematic volumes, covering the Middle Ages (with particular reference to Central and Eastern Europe), as well as critical editions and book reviews, all of which fall within the chronological scope of ca. 700 – ca. 1550. Critical editions are published in Latin with introductions and commentaries in English, French or German. Articles and book reviews are published exclusively in English, French and German.

FOCUS AND SCOPE

Acta Mediaevalia. Series Nova is a continuation of the serial publication Acta Mediaevalia, opening new horizons. Until 2014 that serial published articles, PhD theses, as well as critical editions of medieval texts. The new form of Acta Mediaevalia. Series Nova differs from its worthy predecessor by being an academic journal published annually from 2024 as thematic volumes. In this way the journal is profiled for specific research problems in the broadly understood realm of medieval studies. Acta Mediaevalia. Series Nova publishes primarily original thematic scholarly articles, as well as critical editions and book reviews.

The aim of Acta Mediaevalia. Series Nova is to provide a broad academic audience with scholarly texts that suit the subject profile of a particular volume and at the same time bring significant value to discourse in medieval studies. The journal seeks to inspire scholars to undertake interdisciplinary research on the Middle Ages, that will bear fruit in the form of high-quality publications. We strongly believe in the value of exchanging scholarly ideas internationally – thus, we accept articles written in English, German and French and our journal is wide open to articles from foreign researchers. This helps reflect the most recent, international discussion on selected research subjects and cherish connections between Polish and global medieval studies.

Preferably, articles to be published in Acta Mediaevalia. Series Nova should refer to the Middle Ages (with particular reference to Central and Eastern Europe) within the chronological scope of ca. 700 – ca. 1550. The journal, focused primarily on popularising research findings on the history of the Middle Ages, is open to interdisciplinary approaches to texts from the domain of the intellectual culture of the Middle Ages in the broad sense of the term, which covers history, art history, philosophy and theology. Each volume is oriented towards a specified research problem. The editorial board makes every effort to circulate a call for papers well in advance to allow contributors enough time to work on their articles before submission.

REVIEW PROCEDURE

The thorough peer review procedure to which all articles submitted to Acta Mediaevalia. Series Nova are subjected, has two stages. First, submissions are assessed by our international Editorial Board. Afterwards, each of the articles approved at the first stage is sent for blind review to two independent anonymous reviewers (double-blind review).

The journal is published on-line first and then in paper covers (100 copies) in December.

As a newly-established academic journal, Acta Mediaevalia. Series Nova is not yet included on the list of academic journals evaluated formally for institutional review purposes by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Poland.

PRESENCE IN DATABASES

From the moment the first volume is published (which is planned for the end of 2024), Acta Mediaevalia. Series Nova will be indexed in the most recognised Polish and foreign full-text academic databases, and this will facilitate fast and easy access to its contents.

OPEN ACCESS POLICY

The Centre for Medieval Studies, along with the editors of Acta Mediaevalia. Series Nova, supports free access to research findings. Our principle is to provide students and researchers with free access to quality research papers with the use of modern technologies and online platforms. Therefore we follow the rules of free access to the content of what we publish, making it fully and freely accessible to readers or their institutions. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, print, search, or distribute full texts of articles, or use them for any other legally approved purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. This policy aligns with the Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) Declaration.
