Biblia w literaturze angielskiej

Abstrakt
Ten artykuł opisuje złożony związek pomiędzy Biblią a literaturą angielską od, cytując D.L. Jeffreya, „szybkiej chrystianizacji Wielkiej Brytanii w VII w. [...] aż do obecnej ery postchrześcijańskiej”. Autor omawia najistotniejsze rezultaty ponad trzynastu wieków tego duchowego zapłodnienia , zajmując się głównie przedstawieniem najistotniejszych motywów i tematów, a niekiedy także komentując ogólne i techniczne aspekty różnych dzieł. Chociaż widzimy, że prawie każdy pisarz – w ten czy inny sposób – zgłębiał motywy biblijne, to jednak za najważniejsze osiągnięcia uznaje się poezję anglosaską, dramat średniowieczny, dzieła poetów metafizycznych: J. Miltona, J. Bunyana i Blake'a. Wydaje się zatem, że literatura zaczęła tracić zainteresowanie Biblią, a raczej zamiast podjęcia misji ewangelizacyjnej wolała wypełniać starą poezję nowymi słowami i ideami; najbardziej znani "dekonstrukcjoniści" to Blake i jego romantyczni wyznawcy: dekadencki Swinburne i tacy moderniści, jak: D.H. Lawrence czy J. Joyce.
