Abstrakt

Zagadnienie dotyczące zarobków  żołnierzy bizantyńskich należy do powszechnie podejmowanych tematów. Tematem budzącym nadal kontrowersje jest sytuacja materialna żołnierzy temowych, którzy często pomijani są w dostępnych źródłach. Celem niniejszego tekstu jest próba określenia wysokości zarobków oraz siły nabywczej temowych żołnierzy w okresie IX - X w. Analiza polega na konfrontacji źródłowej oraz ustosunkowanie się aktualnego stanu badań. Głównym wnioskiem tekstu jest to, że sytuacja metarielna żołnierzy temowych była zróżnicowana i zależała od tego, czy rekrut czerpał główne dochody z ziemi żołnierskiej, czy też był ochotnikiem bez lepszych perspektyw na życie. W tym drugim przypadku dopiero status weterana pozwalał na osiągnięcie dochodów pozwalających na utrzymanie rodziny.
