Abstrakt
Około 390 r. św. Hieronim zarzucił pracę nad tłumaczeniem greckiej Septuaginty na łacinę i zaczął przekładać tekst Starego Testamentu – jak sam wielokrotnie mówi – bezpośrednio z języka hebrajskiego. Z zapewnień samego Hieronima wynika jednoznacznie, że w tej pracy translatorskiej kieruje się ‘hebrajską prawdą’ (Hebraica veritas) i podaje, że chodzi o hebrajski oryginał, a nie greckie tłumaczenia heksaplarne oparte o hebrajski tekst Biblii. Hieronim odchodzi więc od Septuaginty na rzecz sensu, który niesie za sobą znany w jego czasach tekst hebrajski. Robi to, jak zapewnia, dzięki znajomości języka hebrajskiego i w odniesieniu do tekstu hebrajskiego, na którym bazuje jego przekład Starego Testamentu. Po śmierci Pauli Rzymianki, przyjaciółki św. Hieronima, przetłumaczył Strydończyk księgi Jozuego, Sędziów i Rut. Miało to miejsce ok. 404/405 r., a więc pod koniec jego pracy nad przekładem z hebrajskiego. Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje tłumaczenie krótkiego pisma, które betlejemski mnich dołączył do przekładu trzech ostatnich ksiąg Oktateuchu, a które znane jest jako Praefatio in libro Iosue. Przekład jest poprzedzony wstępem, który wprowadza w problemy, na jakie napotykamy podczas lektury tego Hieronimowego opusculum.
