Sarmacki obelisk

Since the second half of the 16th century obelisk has become a popular architectural form in Poland. It was used as an architectural ornament and, at the same time, a symbol. It should be noted, that the difference between a pyramid and an obelisk was in Europe of this period for a long time unclear. In Poland obelisk appeared in architecture, sculpture (especially in tomb sculpture), wood-craving (especially in altars), in emblematic and panegirycal illustrations.
