From the Naturalist to the Thesis Novel: Between Revolution and Evolution
Abstract
This article analyses the transition from the naturalist to the thesis novel and, therefore, investigates the transformation of the novel at the end of the nineteenth century. We propose to begin by examining the different steps of that transition, or rather that ‘revolution’ (combating the decadent spirit, admitting the predominance of religion, advocating greater openness to humanity, taking a greater interest in the social and moral problems of the time). We will then attempt to answer the following question: is the transition from the naturalist novel to the thesis novel not a sign of the novel evolution (emergence of an ideological and utopian discourse, questioning of the reader, didactic tone), and does it not, consequently, reflect the transformation of the novel at the turn of the century?
