Robert Caze’s Mixed Forms: The Impossible Novel?
Abstract
In his works, the “petit naturaliste” Robert Caze seems to offer a reader a form somewhere between the short and the long ones: a mixed form able to represent the modest lives depicted in them, lives that cannot be romanticized or novelized. Caze seems to distance himself from the genre of the novel, in particular the great Zolian novel, by borrowing methods specific to the short story, his mixed form being halfway between the short and the long ones. Hence, the novel is, if not undermined, at least questioned and placed at a distance. The novel does not seem to be the genre best suited to convey the voices of banal, mediocre characters, therefore the mixed form is seen as a more effective way of representing nineteenth-century society.
