Writing and Reading a Novel. The Attitude of a Rebel Writer in the Novels of Georges Darien
Abstract
At the turn of the 19th century, Georges Darien’s novels were closely associated with the expression of revolt: against family, school, army, Church and bourgeoisie. However, this uprising against all forms of established authority is not limited to a simple recurring motif in the fiction, quite the contrary. The novelist-reader (virtual library), who finds his place in the libertarian literature of the time, questions literature and its most emblematic materiality: the book. Darien discloses a vision of literature and its usefulness that can be linked to an anarchist milieu, sharing the reservations of a writer who undeniably finds his place among authors for whom revolt is an ‘état d’esprit’, Octave Mirbeau. The act of reading and writing seen from the angle of indignation expose Darien’s way of writing a novel: it follows a libertarian tradition and singles out a revolt rooted in decisive, in many respects, past ordeals.
