The Poetics of the Bizarre in Le Spleen de Paris: An Eccentric Lyricism
Abstract
The Baudelairean notion of the bizarre contains an idea of decentering: it is essentially eccentric and refers to the tradition of Romantic tales defined by erratic composition and an anti-novelistic poetics. Baudelaire, in our opinion, recalls this tradition and creates in Le Spleen de Paris an eccentric lyricism, an attack on traditional lyricism. A true poetics of the bizarre emerges in Le Spleen de Paris, expressed through a geographical wandering: a stroll guided by curiosity, a term that presupposes going outside oneself. The poet is extravagant, his identity is unstable, blurring the boundary between subject and object. He opens himself to the marginalized and wanders through a fantastic universe, poised between the real and the surreal. The clashes and accidents in these “extraordinary stories” are narrative, generic, tonal and lexical.
