Cukrzyca jest zespołem chorób metabolicznych, charakteryzujących się hiperglikemią, wywołaną zaburzeniami wydzielania i/lub działania insuliny. Przyczyny hiperglikemii istotnie się różnią w zależności od typu cukrzycy. Zachorowalność na tę chorobę stale rośnie, zarówno u dorosłych, jak i u dzieci, a konsekwencją schorzenia są ciężkie powikłania, będące przyczyną zgonu pacjentów. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie etiopatogenezy, klasyfikacji oraz metod leczenia cukrzycy.
