Abstract

The essay discusses human temporal orientation towards the future and reflects on the ways of living the present moment. Pascal’s observations on a tendency, characteristic of the human being, to neglect the present is confronted with the selected literary works whose protagonists are engrossed in anticipating whatever is to happen in a distant, indefinite time.
