Abstract
The article focuses on the life and work of Stefania Wolicka-Arnd, the first Polish woman with a doctorate in philosophy in the Kingdom of Poland and in modern Europe. After Wolicka-Arnd’s return to Poland from Switzerland, where she had done her doctorate, she became an active proponent of the “woman’s question,” and the core of her activity was the struggle for women’s right to higher education.
I am grateful to Carrie de Silva for her support in my search for photographs of Stefania photographs and to Julita Polanska for her help in my reading of her letters. My special thanks go to Karin Huser, Bogumiła Husak, Andrea Siegels, and Krystyna Sztranc, who all helped me in my archival research. Their assistance was invaluable in my reconstruction of the biography of Stefania Wolicka.
