The essay critically analyzes the image, used by John Paul II in his encyclical Fides et Ratio, of faith and reason as two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth. The author points to problems related to the image in question and suggests their solutions by drawing on the thought of historical authors, such as St. Augustin, St. Anselm of Canterbury, Blaise Pascal, and Marian Morawski, and on that of philosophers participating in ongoing debates on the role of Christianity in culture and relationships between religion, science, and esotericism.
