Human rights in ReRum novaRum. A narrative alternative towards the program of modernity

This paper portrays the outcomes of pope Leo XIII’s social encyclical letter Rerum novarum (1891) analysis, carried out from the vantage point of its contribution to the dissemination of the modern concept of human rights. Despite the fact, that the eighteenth century anti-Catholic attitude of the French secularism towards the Church did not create positive ambience for reception of human rights in their modern form by the Church, nonetheless, those universal values (life, freedom, property) human rights strive to protect, had been clearly articulated in many sections of the aforementioned Leo’s document. Differences in the terminology adopted for description of human rights between secular humanism and the Church’s social teaching of that time, does not seem to justify opinions, that papacy remained adamant about the claims ignited by the modern idea of human rights. On the contrary, universal human values, anchored and protected by human rights, were part and parcel of Church’s teaching from its very origin.
