Call for Papers: THE ETHOS OF COLOR
Submissions will focus on issues regarding the role and use of color in various contexts in culture and demonstrate how the use of color transcends the realm of aesthetics and becomes an active agent conveying emotions, naming phenomena and events significant to a culture, or even extracting or underscoring their philosophical meaning. The use of color and color as such are integral elements of the human experience in the sense of both an individual human experience par excellence and the experience of the Other, thus entering the realm of moral sense. The designates of the concept of color transcend the range of those marked by visuality and are present within various areas of individual as well as collective experience, among them the realm of emotions (colors of feelings), music (colors of sound), religion, politics, literature, film, and broadly conceived arts (the symbolism of color), as well as the domains of imagination and language (colors of words or concepts). Thus, the concept of color, traditionally associated with and interpreted within the sphere of painting goes beyond its limits and informs culture as such, not infrequently assuming material shapes. The phenomenon in question is characteristic not only of the Western culture, but also of cultures rooted in different intellectual traditions, where it comes into being in ways specific to them. We invite authors interested in the delineated topics to submit their proposed contributions.
