Abstract
The essay presents a reflection, inspired by the philosophical thought of Roger Scruton, on the concept of home. Creating a home is considered as a human universal: an activity characteristic of human, i.e., rational, beings who, in adapting their surroundings to themselves and themselves to their surroundings, draw particularly on their capacity of aesthetic judgement. The author also addresses the idea of oikophilia (the love of home) seen as the foundation of care for the human community and the natural environment and asks questions concerning the rationality of our everyday practices related to shaping our habitats.
