Abstract

The subject-matter of the reflections presented in the article is the concept of “felicitous” memory developed by the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur. The author describes Ricoeur’s understanding of the most important mnemonic phenomena, such as memory, recollection, forgetfulness, evocation, and recognition and explains the ways in which such phenomena are interrelated. The idea of memory as an action is also elucidated; in Ricoeur’s view, on the one hand, memory is connected with the imperative of fidelity, while, on the other, it exercises a creative power over subjective identity. In addition, the author ponders the role of another who enters the area of the work of—both individual and collective—memory.
