Abstract

The paper presents the life and work of Carmen Hernández Barrera (1930-2016), co-initiator, together with Francisco (Kiko) Argüello, of the Neocatechumenal Way. The missionary vocation Hernández Barrera wished to pursue already as a young woman transformed in her life into a service for the sake of evangelization and formation of the catechumenal way of fulfilling the Christian initiation. The article shows how Hernández Barrera’s deep relationship with Christ, the suffering and loneliness she experienced, as well as her close contacts with the founders of the conciliar renewal, influenced the content of the catecheses she preached and the ecclesial formation of neocatechumenal communities.
