Another Assault on John Paul II (trans. J. Merecki, SDS)

Abstract
George Weigel highlights the role and significance to the Catholic Church of John Paul II’s moral teaching and refers to an important discussion of issues regarding respect for human life the Pope had with Dr. Jérôme Lejeune. The conversation in question has a symbolic appeal today, since it took place on 13 May 1981, the day an attempt on the life of the Holy Father was made by Mehmet Ali Agca. Weigel holds that the intentions of representatives of the currents of modern theology which promote proportionalism and have become increasingly dominant in the theological landscape of today can be also interpreted in terms of an assault on the Pope. Their actions are destructive in their nature, in particular in view of the fact that the person and example of John Paul II, as well as his deeply humane teaching on the human person, her life and dignity, continue to inspire the Church and the world.
