Abstract

The author of the essay refers to an aspiration, expressed by Wojciech Kilar, to become in the area of symphonic (concert-philharmonic) music an artist of a stature as great as that achieved by Stanisław Moniuszko in the field of opera. The author argues that the two composers display similar attitudes as creative artists and that Kilar, on account of his achievements and of the role he played in Polish music, deserves to be considered the “contemporary Moniuszko.”

Keywords:

Wojciech Kilar, contemporary music, autonomous and functional music
