Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyze the correlation of religiosity and emotional responses towards artificial intelligence (AI) of students in Poland and the UK. At a time when AI is increasingly penetrating our daily lives, it is important to establish the socio-cultural determinants of attitudes towards this rapidly developing technology. An important part of society’s cultural mosaic is religiosity and, as such, it can influence emotional responses to AI. This provides a rationale for investigating how religions and religiosity relate to attitudes towards AI in different settings. The study used a two-factor analysis of variance comparing the emotional responses of Polish and UK students to AI according to their declared religiosity, which allowed to identify significant differences in the level of expressed emotions such as curiosity, fear, sadness, anger, trust, disgust or joy between the non-religious, religious and religiously indifferent groups. Significant differences in emotional perception of AI were revealed between individuals with different levels of religiosity depending on the place of study. The results point to a need to consider religion and religiosity in the design and implementation of AI. This can contribute to a greater acceptance of the technology in a culturally and religiously diverse society. Understanding the impact of religiosity on the reception of AI is also important for the design and implementation of ethically responsible AI solutions, which should consider the diversity of individuals’ beliefs and value systems.
