Experience, Subject, and Being: At the Roots of Karol Wojtyła’s Philosophical Anthropology

Abstract
The paper attempts to show the key points of the specificity of the experience and subjectivity of the person in the philosophy of Karol Wojtyła, highlighting his most significant achievements in this area. The discussion highlights the importance of elementary human experience, the personal (lived-experiential) character of consciousness, in which experience creates the personal ‘I,’ and the multifaceted procedure of harmonizing the subjective and objective aspects in the experience of the person as an agent and existing subject. Various elements of the bipolarity of inner experience are also discussed, such as cognition and lived-experience, self-knowledge and self-consciousness, reflectivity and reflexivity, as well as metaphysical subjectivity and personal subjectivity. A significant value of Wojtyła’s philosophical method consists in showing the way in which the human being is a subject, how experience reveals and constitutes the personal ‘I’ and, at the same time, how it grounds the person in real existence. The cognitive results thus achieved have become an indispensable ground for analyses of the important anthropological and ethical issues addressed by Wojtyła in the further stages of his philosophical investigations.
