Abstract
This article commemorates the life and writings of Rev. Prof. Henryk Misztal (1936–2020), a long-term employee of the Faculty of Law, Canon Law and Administration, an eminent scholar of law on religion and canon law, a teacher and tutor of several generations of young people. The paper discusses his career path associated with The John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, the formation and development of his research interests and finally his involvement in the various fields of research, teachings, and personal activities. Henryk Misztal was awarded his doctorate (degree of doktor nauk prawnych) in 1968, and his habilitation (the degree of doktor habilitowany nauk prawnych) in 1986 and the professor title in 1992. In the years of 1983– 1987 he was the vice-dean of the Faculty of Canon Law and Legal Sciences and in 1987–1989 performed the duties of the dean of the Faculty. In 1996–1997 he was appointed the Head of the Section of Canon Law of the Faculty of Canon and Secular Law. Furthermore, Rev. Misztal was assigned as the head of the Department of Law on Religion for years 1980-2007 and as the Head of the Department of Canonization Law for 1984–2004. These two areas of interest dominated his research and organizational activity. The article presents the main Henryk Misztal’s fields of research, starting from the prior censorship of church documents, through the canonization law, to the law on religion. It draws attention to the number and quality of the impressive scale of his scientific achievements that consist of over 500 publications, out of which 42 constitute monographs. The article also presents the involvement of the Rev. Professor in the activities of the Roman Catholic Church in Lublin. It has not been forgotten that he was a hardworking, dutiful, and modest man
