Abstract

The subject of this paper is the problem of an ongoing marriage as an impediment to religious life, as specified in Can. 643 § 1, no. 2 of the Code of Canon Law. The aim of the study was to show that current marriage prevents entry into a religious order – it is not only an impediment to admission to the novitiate, but also prevents religious life in general. The research objective thus defined was realised through a description and thorough analysis of the applicable regulations and texts of the Magisterium of the Church. The analysis of the aforementioned sources led to several main conclusions. Firstly, it was proven that marriage and religious life are mutually exclusive. Secondly, it was established that an ongoing marriage is an impediment to religious life which has legal consequences. Thirdly, the problem of the cessation of impedimentum ligaminis was clarified and the possible ways of its termination were shown.
