"Borderline" personality disorders as a cause of mental incapacity to marry in the judicature of the Metropolitan Court in Lublin

Abstract
The purpose of the article is to present what borderline personality disorder is and how it affects the ability of prospective spouses to enter into a valid marriage. Personality disorders should be distinguished from mental illness, although the accompanying symptoms are often similar. Unlike mental illness, personality disorders are not “curable” – as a result of psychological therapy, often supported by pharmacotherapy. A person affected by the disorder can only be taught to cope with extreme emotions. The author of the study describes borderline personality disorders, indicating how they affect taking up and performing important marital duties. Finally, based on the analysis of the files of marriage annulment cases pending before the Metropolitan Court in Lublin, the author of the paper presents specific types of behaviour typical of people with borderline personality disorders.
