Initiation rites and rituals in Casamance (Senegal). Ethnohistorical analysis

This article presents selected elements of the social and cultural organization of some groups (Baynounk and Diola) currently living in Casamance, a region in the southwestern part of Senegal. Based on ethnohistorical and anthropological data, it presents the chronology of settlement in the region and its specificity. This “specificity” is interpreted through the prism of initiation rites and rituals (including pre-initiation) in Baynounk and Diola. These rituals are important in the context of cultural differences that arise in the context of conflict and separatist aspirations of the inhabitants of Casamance. They are still very much alive, and despite the ongoing modernization processes, they strengthen their regional identities. This paper is based on available historical sources and ethnographic materials obtained during several research trips to Casamance in Senegal.
