Rev. Ignacy Polkowski (1833–1888) in the light of his legacy stored in the Wawel Chapter Archives

Abstract
The life and activities of Rev. Ignacy Polkowski, in light of his personal documents stored in the Wawel Chapter Archives, can be summarised by referring to three places: archives, libraries and church museums. Already as a student, he began accumulating a book collection that eventually numbered about 10,000 works and was rich in incunabula, 16th-century polonica, Copernican works and old prints. Thematically, it had the character of a theological and historical collection. After the January Uprising, when Rev. I. Polkowski settled in the estate of the Counts of Skórzewski family in Lubostroń in Greater Poland, he became a librarian organizing their collections. As a result of Kulturkampf, he had to leave Greater Poland and arrived in Kraków, where he became director of the Wawel Chapter Archives, and began arranging its resources and editing the most valuable documents. His work (1878–1888) left a lasting mark on the institution. Henceforth, the archive has been referred to either before I. Polkowski or after I. Polkowski. While working in Lubostroń, the clergyman took part in archaeological work that provided many objects for archaeological museums. At the same time, he was involved in medal making. The presented biographical note of Rev. I. Polkowski was developed on the basis of archival materials hitherto unavailable to historians, located in the chapter archives in Kraków. These are the personal documents of Rev. I. Polkowski collected by himself, which make the article presented hereunder his most detailed published biography. It outlines the scientific activities of Rev. I. Polkowski, carried out first in Warsaw, then in Poznań, and finally in Kraków. He was also presented as a witness to landmark events in the Polish lands in the 19th century: the January Uprising in Warsaw, Kulturkampf in Greater Poland, the Galician autonomy in Kraków, and the establishment of the Polish Academy of Learning, to mention a few.
