“Wait for the Lord, take courage, be stouthearted, wait for the Lord!” (Ps 27:14): The Idea of Waiting, as Expressed in the Old Testament
Maciej DŻUGAN
Theological Institute, Przemyśl (Poland) , PolandAbstract
Waiting is one of the central biblical ideas. The aim of the article is present this concept in the Old Testament. The author first shows the waiting of man as the intention of the Creator, then presents the most important terms expressing the idea in question in the Old Testament. In the main part of the paper, the author, referring to the sin of man in paradise, presents the theological concept of waiting, which, in the history of salvation, first takes the form of waiting for the final defeat of evil and sin (by the Seed of the woman; Gen 3:15), for the state of paradisiac prosperity and happiness (for the blessing, descendants, and lands), and finally for a close relationship with God and his justice (for the covenant and the law). In each of these cases, expectations of those who wait are not fulfilled, but transposed, and take on transcendent, apocalyptic, and existential dimensions.
