In the article the ban on depriving a human being of life has been discussed, with particular attention paid to the institution of legal countertypes of the right to life comprising such situations as: defending any person from unlawful violence, effecting a lawful arrest, preventing the escape of a person lawfully detained or taking lawful action for the purpose of quelling a riot or insurrection. The above issues have been supplemented by jurisprudence of the European Commission of Human Rights and the European Court of Human Rights. Judgments of Strasbourg authorities included in the chapter although controversial allowed for penetrating analysis of the subject.
