Abstract

The possibility for convicts to work is regulated by the law of the country concerned. In Polish executive penal law, work is one of the measures of influence on convicts, whose task is to achieve the individual preventive objectives of imprisonment. In the Polish penitentiary system, as far as the possibilities that exist on the labour market allow, convicts are employed on the assumption that work has many important functions.

A total of 452 convicts from seven randomly selected prisons across Poland took part in the survey. This study aims to find out the opinions of imprisoned persons about the work they currently do. A proprietary survey questionnaire was used.

The results show that convicts perceive the benefits of the work they undertake, including changes in their behaviour, improved wellbeing and improved relationships with others. Work is an important factor in terms of enriching their lives in isolation. The factor that contributes most to prisoners’ dissatisfaction with their work is excessive deductions from their pay.
