Father Walerian Meysztowicz (1893–1982). The Road to the Extraordinary Chair of Canon Law at the Faculty of Theology of the Stephen Bathory University in Vilnius
Abstract
The article discusses a period in the life of Fr. Walerian Meysztowicz (1893–1982) and his connections with Vilnius. The author attempts to describe the circumstances of his education at the Stephen Bathory University in Vilnius and at the Vilnius Seminary. He then discusses the recognition of the doctorate of sacred theology obtained in Rome, which enabled W. Meysztowicz to take up commissioned lectureships and opened the way to an academic career. This was followed by habilitation and a docent title in canon law. After Fr. Bronisław Żongołłowicz’s retirement, it was W. Meysztowicz who was seen as his successor in the Chair of Canon Law at the Faculty of Theology of the Stephen Bathory University. B. Żongołłowicz himself intensely promoted W. Meysztowicz. Based on the procedure envisaged by law, W. Meysztowicz received his professorial appointment from the President of the Republic of Poland on 14 September 1937. Due to his numerous diplomatic duties resulting from his post at the Embassy of the Republic of Poland to the Holy See, W. Meysztowicz was unable to fulfil his duties as an academic lecturer. His academic career in Vilnius was interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War.
