The Significance of the Council of Nicea (325) for the Church from a 1700-year Perspective

Abstract

The main purpose of this article is to show the ever-present and inspiring theological depth of the First Council of Nicaea of 1700 years ago, the anniversary of which is now one of the pillars of the Jubilee Year celebrations throughout the Church. The text is divided into three closely related sections. The first part of the article is a historical introduction, without which it is not possible to understand the circumstances of the event in its religious and political context at the time. The central part of the text is devoted to the theological achievements of the Council, particularly the analysis of the Nicene Creed in its christological section. This element developed by the Council fathers in relation to the Arian controversy represents the most important, innovative turn in theological thinking to date. The final section, containing the conclusions, summarises its most important implications relevant throughout the history of the Church.

The heritage of the Council of Nicaea of 325 is first and foremost the Symbol of Faith, which to this day constitutes the doctrinal foundation of Christianity, and of a Christianity that was undivided at the time, and thus this Nicene Creed is still the common heritage of all Christians, and therein lies its extraordinary ecumenical potential in the modern era. Therefore, it is also important to remember that this Council is not only a great theology, because in fact every Christian constantly draws on it by repeating every Sunday the Creed, the framework of which originated in Nicaea and permanently defines our identity as believers in Christ.
