Urban Solidarity – Warsaw Residents’ Attitudes towards Poverty

Abstract
The article presents an analysis of solidarity both as a social phenomenon and as a category helpful in interpreting collective attitudes in relation to the situation of poverty. The situation of poverty is a so-called traditional problem, and attitudes towards poverty and attitudes towards people experiencing poverty, people that cannot fully participate in social life, act as a kind of test revealing the practical dimension of social solidarity in a given community. Therefore, referring to the results of a survey conducted in 2022 on a representative group of Warsaw residents, we show what attitudes Warsaw residents adopted towards people living in poverty and on this basis we conclude what the nature of metropolitan solidarity was and what factors determine it. So it come out that Warsaw solidarity is not determined by classic neighbourhood resulting from the common inhabitation of physical space. Other issues come to the fore, including the subjectivity we identified resulting from the positive assessment and approval of civic activity, as well as its constant practice. The solidarity towards the poor identified by us is therefore based neither on deep community, collective identity and the mutual responsibility resulting from it nor on the idea of communitarianism, nor is it pragmatic (calculated), but its strong component is the issue of citizenship.
