Experiences and Experiments on Humans. A Sociomedical Approach

Abstract
In medical science, experimental research is associated with the main mission of medicine, which is to save human health and life. In addition to an orientation towards pragmatism and functionality, medicine also has ethical duties involving adherence to moral principles and, among other things, the subjective treatment of the patient. However, the history of medicine provides examples of reifying patients and using” them as “objects” in experimental treatments. In this context, bioethics and the humanities and social sciences in medicine have begun to play an important advocacy role for patients’ rights. This article attempts to describe and interpret the meaning of selected experimental medical techniques and technologies applied to patients and their consequences from the perspective of the classical sociology of medicine. This paper uses the available literature on the subject and the results of a survey of experiences and experiments on humans, which is a subject of interest in sociological sciences. The results of the author’s desk research indicated that medical experiences and experiments on humans testing novel technologies described in the literature also resulted in unintended adverse outcomes for the health of patients. The current level of medical development, the state of legislation, the level of public awareness and the extent of patient knowledge determine the state of affairs, within which there should be the establishment of universal rules for the safe use at the stage of fundamental research of innovative medical technologies based on the results of experiences and experiments on humans. The issues presented in this article are scarcely addressed within the Polish sociology of medicine. The example of experiments of this kind described here raises controversies of ethical and moral nature. In experimental research on humans, techniques that interfere with the integrity and identity of the human person cannot be accepted, so, for example, acts of external interference with genetic heritage are against the dignity of the human being and should not be justified for the sake of any potential beneficial health effects in the future.
