Theory of Leon Petrażycki in the context of Russian philosophy of law (disciples and followers)

This article is devoted to the analysis of the works of Pitirim Sorokin, Nikolay Timashev and Georges Gurvitch, who were disciples of Leon Petrażycki and developed his psychological concept of law. These authors, who laid the foundations of contemporary sociology of law in the US and France, enriched and developed Petrażycki’s concept in the direction of legal sociology. Another author, Mikhail Rejsner, can be viewed as a follower of Petrażycki’s teaching because his scientific ideas were profoundly influenced by Petrażycki and psychological school of legal science. On the basis of Petrażycki’s concept of law and taking into consideration works of his followers and critics, we offer the following definition of the essence of law: law is an intersubjective, socio-psychological phenomenon, which expresses mankind’s aspiration towards the ideal of Justice and Love, as highest social values.
