European Court of Human Rights in Strasburg – the membership and the status of judges

Abstract
The European Court of Human Rights in Strasburg is an international judicial body established under the European Convention of Human Rights. In the article there is presented the membership and the status of judges. The Court is made up of 47 judges, which are elected by the Parliamentary Assembly, of the Council of Europe, from lists of three candidates nominated by each State which has ratified the European Convention of Human Rights. Under the present terms of the Convention, judges are elected for six years and can be re-elected. What is very important, judges are totally independent. According to the requirements of office, judges should be people with the highest level of moral character and must either be qualified to exercise a high judicial office or be jurists of recognized competence.
