Abstract

Caesarius of Arles was one of the most prominent figures of his time. He sought to influence the behaviour of his subordinate community through impassioned and deeply thoughtful sermons. Various types of magical practices were among the issues addressed in them. Among other things, he condemned: divination by examining the entrails of animals (haruspicia), divination by examining the behaviour of birds (auguria) or astrology, as well as the use of conjurers, sorcerers, fortune-tellers and soothsayers. According to the Bishop of Arles, all forms of magical activities shared one characteristic – a link to the activity of the devil. The focus of this article is the magical practices that were considered harmful in Sermons by the Gallic preacher. The author employs historical, comparative and philological methods.
