Dogmatic and Pastoral Coherence of the Second Vatican Council. A Contribution to the Hermeneutics of Its Texts and Message

Abstrakt
This paper is an attempt to present a synthetic approach to the unity of the theological message of the last of the ecumenical councils, Vatican II. The research perspective is strictly theological, and considering the texts themselves, it sets aside their history. The author’s ambition is to propose a coherent interpretation of the three definitions presented by the Council Fathers: liturgy, Church, and revelation. It appears that there is a far-reaching ideological coherence between them. This article proposes finding this common theological foundation in the concept of divine, Trinitarian self-giving in the world. This is what enables a more vibrant exchange between theology and the pastoral life of the Church. These quasi-definitions are the starting point and the theological foundation for most of the Council’s proposals, including the mutual opening of doctrine and pastoral care and a broader dialogue with the world. In this way, the article also presents a significant fragment of the Council’s hermeneutics, the aim of which is to seek the unity and coherence of the texts as they were promulgated.

Robert J. Woźniak, presbyter of the Archdiocese of Cracow, PhD in dogmatic theology, professor at the Pontifical University of John Paull II in Cracow, works in the Department of Theological Anthropology. He received his doctorate in dogmatic theology in 2005 from the University of Navarra in Pamplona. He had academic stints at Fordham University in New York and Gregorian University in Rome. He has taught at the Facultad de Teología Pontificia i Civil in Lima, Peru. He is vice president of the Polish Society of Dogmatic Theologians, was editor-in-chief of Theological Research, and currently edits two collections of theological books: Theological Thought (WAM) and Sapientia (Bratni Zew). He is a member of the Pontifical Academy of Theology at the Pontifical Council for Culture and the Philosophy of Science Section at the PAU. He works mainly on Trinitarian theology, the relationship between theology and philosophy, and the theological themes of postmodernism. In 2008, he received the Ergo Hestia and Znak Award named after Rev. J. Tischner for his book The Future, Theology, Society (WAM, Kraków 2007). He has also published, among others, Primitas et plenitudo. Dios Padre en la teología trinitaria de San Buenaventura (Eunsa, Pamplona 2007), Dogma and Method.
