The destruction of churches in the diocese of Sandomierz in the Sandomierz Lodgement in 1944 in the light of parish priests' reports

Abstract
Reports from parish priests concerning damage to churches, which were sent to the Sandomierz curia in the spring of 1945, are an invaluable source for researching war losses in parishes. They contain very important information about churches in the Baranów-Sandomierz lodgement. It was established that five churches (6% of the total) were completely destroyed, while 49 churches and two temporary chapels (63%) suffered damage, sometimes very serious. The losses cannot be analysed solely in material items. Almost all of the temples were historical monuments, and the furnishings of some were priceless. The damage to cultural heritage proved to be enormous. The spiritual consequences should also not be forgotten, as churches were the centre of religious life for parishioners, and some communities were deprived of them for a long time.
