Nineteenth-century folk iconography of Our Lady of La Salette in the collection of the Seweryn Udziela Etnographic Museum in Kraków

Abstract
The 19th century was a period of a particularly intense development of Marian devotion in the history of the Catholic Church, to many private Marian apparitions, especially in France. On 19 September 1846, in the French Alps, at La Salette, Lady Mary appeared to two children, giving them her message. These children were Mélanie-Françoise Mathieu-Calvat (1831-1904) and Maximin-Pieree Giaud (1835-1875). As soon as a year later, the news of this event reached Poland thanks to the publication of Rev. The fourteen paintings of Our Lady of La Salette in the collection of the Seweryn Udziela Etnographic Museum in Kraków, created without resilience on the models of official church art, are a kind of exception against the bakcground of folk painting and together they form a specific type of representation, which is unknown outside southern Poland. They definitely differ from the French depictions both in terms of the dress of the Virgi Mary and the children, by the presence of monastery buildings or the village of La Salette. The primary source of inspiration for Polish folk painters was a repeatedly published pamphlet by Rev. Laxý. These paintings use the simplest type of axial composition, in which the central figure dominates the rest of the representation. The landscape, devoid of any direct connection to the main character, serves as a bakcdrop, while the scene taking pace agaist it serves as an attribute. The space was meant to be three-dimensional, divided into colourful strips and with the buildings on the horizon line, although without the proportions of the architectural elements, the figures of children and animals. By using the division of the composition into the celestial and terrestial spheres, the tendency to fully develop the surface of the painting is discernible, with the three heads of angels, forming a wreath of clouds, are placed as a complement to the Virgin Mary floating to the sky. We can rarely find dating on the pictures, much less a painter's signature. It is a type of folk painting, genetically linked to the region of southern Poland during the 19th century.
